渔夫们英文故事

Once there were six brothers who were fishing at a river.The first brother was sitting in a boat.The second brother was sitting on a log.The third brother was standing on a bridge.The fourth brother was standing near the bridge.The fifth brother was sitting under a tree.The sixth brother was sitting on a box.

They fished there all day and got a lot of fish.When it was time to go home, the brothers became a little worried.

“We have been near the river, ”said the brother in the boat.“One of us might easily have fallen into the river.I shall count all the brothers to be sure there are six of us.”

And he began to count:“I see one brother on the log.That's one.And another on the bridge.That's two.And another near the bridge.That's three. And another under the tree.That's four.And another on the box.That's five.”

“Only five! We have lost a brother! ”But he forgot to count himself.

“Can it really be? ”cried the brother on the log.“Have we really lost a brother? ”

And he, too, began to count:“I see one brother in the boat.That's one. And another on the bridge.That's two.And another near the bridge.That's three.And another under the tree.That's four.And another on the box.That's five.Only five.What will our mother say? ”

And he didn't count himself, either.

“Let me check from here! ”cried the brother under the tree.“I see one brother in the boat.That's one.And another on the bridge.That's two.And another near the bridge.That's three.And another on the box.That's four.And another on the log.That's five.Five in all, oh, unhappy day.”

Then the fourth brother counted, and the fifth and the sixth—each one counted only five brothers because each forgot to count himself.

Then along came a boy.“What's the matter? ”he asked.“You seem to be unhappy.”

“Because six of us came here to fish, and now there are only five of us left. One of our brothers has been drowned! ”

The boy looked at them and then smiled.

“Very well, ”said the boy, “let me count you all.One, two, three, four, five, six.You are all here.”Six! The brothers looked at each other.

There were six of them again! They were very happy.
