Some people think government should ensure the healthy lifestyle of people, but others argue that it should be decided by individuals. Discuss and give your opinion.

【Sample Answer】

A famous American journalist Franklin P. Adams once said: Health is the thing that makes you feel that now is the best time of the year. How to keep health and maintain a healthy life style is a life long effort to every one. The past year has witnessed contentious debates about public health around smoking bans, alcohol licensing, food labeling and junk food advertising. Whether government should play a role here is a complex and subtle issue.

Some people argue that any government intervention in these areas is an unnecessary intrusion into people's lives. They claim that although it is important for everyone to eat a healthy diet and maintain a healthy weight, government should leave it to individuals to make the decision for themselves.

Others argue that it is the government's responsibility to create a place where people can live longer and have a better quality of life. They believe only the state can alter the environment that shapes people's decisions cnd behavior. National legislation brings about changes that individuals on their own cannot, and sets new standards for the public good.

For example, the alcohol use, anti-tobacco and road safety can only be regulating by taxation, advertising bans, and regulations proscribing behavior. In addition to that, national education creates a public health framework and shape individual choices towards healthier and safer behavior.

In my idea rather than condemning such activity of the government as ' nanny statist', it might be more appropriate to view it as a form of ' stewardship'. While a lot of work needs to he done, not only at the national level but all the people in the society, encouraging healthy living is a key part in our life. And I am sure government intervention will safeguard public health.
