I Finally Connected with Daddy

Though my parents separated early on in my childhood, my mother made sure that Ihad contact with my father's family. She and his sister in law were friends, soI visited my aunt quite often. Yet my father, a troubled man, had little contactwith me. As I grew, I often wished for a time when I could get to know himbetter. Years would pass before I would see him on a continual basis.

When I was eleven, my mother took me for our yearly visit with my aunt. When wewalked into her living room, I noticed a tall man sitting on the sofa, watchingTV. Though he looked familiar, I assumed he was a friend of my aunt's—or better,a beau!

But the surprised look on my mother's face said something else entirely

.Finally, she smiled, putting me at ease.“Honey, you remember your father, don'tyou?”

I stuck out my hand.“Nice to see you again, sir.”

My father opened his arms to me.“Is a hug out of the question?”

I liked him instantly and hugged my father tightly.

My parents chatted about old times, and then I listened intently as my fatherexplained why he hadn't been in my life since I was very young. We reconciledthat day, and I saw my dad at least once a month from that day on for the nextfour years.

One night when I was fifteen, I dreamt that I met my father at the front door.

He said,“I’ve really enjoyed knowing you. You’re a good girl.”

I remember smiling at him, and then walking away.“We’ll talk soon,” I calledover my shoulders.

When I got up that morning, my mother had bad news.“Your aunt called, honey.

Your father was in an accident last night....”

She didn't need to finish. I already knew, and I was devastated. He’d been morethan just my dad; I had honestly liked him and I was saddened that I’d lost myfriend.

A day later, a box came in the mail addressed to me. It was from my father. Iread the enclosed note:I'm so glad we got to know each other. Inside the boxwas a silver necklace with our initials intertwined.

I tore into my mother's bedroom and cried my eyes out.“How did he know?”

“Your dad always was a little psychic, honey.”

I put the necklace on that day and I’ve worn it every day since. It reminds methat no matter what, I am always connected with my dad. I always will be.
