Is the Internet addictive?互联网会让人上瘾吗

The Internet has emerged”the centerpiece of many people's life, but is itaddictive? People who study this issue believe that Internet addiction is as real asalcoholism.

Most people will spend time doing something that is fun, but some Internet usershave moved past fun to clinical addiction which is called Internet addiction disorder(IAD).


They often lose self-control and crave surfing the Internet, much as a smokercraves a cigarette. Like others who arc addicted to something--whether it be gamblingor cocaine-they suffer withdrawal symptoms when they are forced to forgo theInternet.

Millions of Internet users routinely go online without any detrimental effects, buta growing sector of the online community is addicted. These people spend betweenfour and ten hours.day on the Internet and will occasionally "binge" for up to 24hours at a time. Numerous cases have been reported in which the Internet was blamedfor broken marriages,


for students dropping out of school, and even for illness resultingin hospital stays. People with IAD confess their addiction on the Internet. Some saythat they don't eat or sleep, they have lost weight and they have been sucked into theInternet.


Some students admit that their addiction is so bad that they are flunking mostof their classes. What's worse, even though they know that they are insanely addictedto the Internet, they don't want to do anything about it.
